Hine-Nui-Te-Po

inspiration and mood board.

Fa’a’amu le petit secret de la nuit (translated as Fa’a’amu, the little secret of the night) is the title of a charming children's story that explores the theme of Polynesian adoption, known as Fa’a’amu. In this enchanting tale, we meet Hine-Nui-Te-Po, the Maori goddess of night and death, who shares a close bond with Orama, the moon. She harbors a deep love for the Wind, Matai. Despite their efforts, the couple struggles to have a child. Meanwhile, Orama finds herself in love with Mahana, the sun. Eventually, Orama becomes pregnant, bringing forth a multitude of stars. Consumed by jealousy and sadness, Hine-Nui-Te-Po, who has never been able to have children of her own, faces heartache. In a touching gesture, Orama decides to bestow one of her children upon Hine-Nui-Te-Po, knowing that she will cherish this child just as fiercely.

In designing this dress, I aimed to capture the strength, beauty, and love embodied by Hine-Nui-Te-Po. The color reflects the essence of the night, while the glitter represents the stars gifted to her by Orama in this beautiful narrative.
